Recalling Universe, ‘Manunggaling Kawulo Gusti’ is a work of performance art by Jacquelyn Soo (Singapore) in collaboration with Iwan Wijono (Indonesia).

The current global situation with the development of modern technology and their economic conditions has affected the lives of humans. In our involvement in the new world economy, we have gradually lost a sense of dignity, faith and strength resulting from inconsistencies of the economic market. While in its infancy, we are blinded & suppressed by these new terms and modes that embody our daily living.

Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta, as one of the most active volcanoes in the Southeast part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, has inspired Jacquelyn Soo in response to today's circumstances. Strong mythology and legends drew inspiration from the volcano, which is said to erupt every four years. There is a high form of respect towards the mythological and mystical Javanese life, as seen through the dedication and devotion in continuing and preserving the heritage, history and identity of Javanese culture.

The last major eruption in 2010 caused damage and death to the villages around Merapi. Repair and reconstruction of homes are in place for the villagers who until recently refused to leave the area around the volcano. There is a sense of dignity and tremendous power of the people on Mount Merapi.

Current living conditions with the spirit of Merapi volcano poured into the work of performance art by Jacquelyn Soo. She invited Iwan Wijono (artist performance art) to bury themselves underground in the sand of Gumuk Pasir Parangtritis (sand dune formed by Merapi) except the head, so that the eye can see above. By being underground, we are connecting back to nature, in a bond with the cyclic universe in a contemporary ritual.
